Much work has been devoted over the last decade concerning the production, stability and structure of fullerene ions. Electron impact ionization of C−60 leads to a bimodial fragmentation pattern, with mostly even-numberd fullerene ions predominantly formed via successive C−2 evaporations. Some time ago [1] at least small amounts of multiply-charged species could be detected above n=32 and it was speculated that these odd-numbered ions may differ in structure from the fullerene-like even numbered ions.
In order to clarify this interesting question we have studied here quantitatevely the metastable decay of odd-numbered, multiply-charged C−41 ions with a two sector field mass spectrometer. We have found that these odd-numberd carbon cluster ions are less stable than their even-numbered counterparts and show a completely different decay behaviour.
