Formation of polarized atomic beams in front of ferromagnets — •Jamal Berakdar — Max-Planck Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik, D-06112 Halle

When an ionic beam passes by a ferromagnetic surface electrons from the surface may be transferred to the beam. The imbalance in the occupied density of states of the majority and the minority bands of the surface results in a spin dependent electronic transfer to the ionic beam and eventually the beam leaves the interaction region with a finite spin polarization. It is shown in this contribution that the polarization of the beam in the exit channel can be linked to that of the ferromagnet providing thus a technique for the investigation of surface magnetism.
