On the projectile-electron loss in fast collisions with heavy atomic targets — •A.B. Voitkiv, N. Grün und W. Scheid — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen, Heinrich-Buff-Ring 16, D-35392 Giessen
The projectile-electron
excitation and loss processes are considered
in collisions with heavy atomic targets
in the intermediate-to-high velocity regime.
In order to describe these processes
at small impact parameters, where
first order theories in the
projectile-target interaction
break down, we use the sudden
and Glauber approximations.
We show that these approximations
lead to the same results
for electronic cross sections.
The main focus of our study is
the total contribution
of the target to the
projectile-electron loss process.
We have estimated
the cross section for the total
electron loss
from H and He+ projectiles.
Our results show that
the interaction of the projectile
electron with the screened
target nucleus contributes most
to the projectile-electron
loss cross section in the
intermediate-to-high velocity regime.
