Semiclassical Electron Scattering in Open Quantum Billiards — •Ludger Wirtz, Stefan Rotter, and Joachim Burgdörfer — Institut für Theoretische Physik, TU Wien, Austria
Two-dimensional open ballistic microstructures can be viewed as "designer atoms" and constitute a link between electron scattering at atoms and quantum transport in solid state physics. The conductance, i.e. the cross section, of such a phase-coherent system displays strong fluctuations as a function of the Fermi energy of the electrons which result from a high density of Feshbach resonances in the open quantum dots. The Fourier spectrum of these fluctuations displays characteristic peaks whose positions and heights can be determined by a semiclassical path analysis. The simplicity of the system allows an accurate calculation of a very large number of trajectories. This makes it possible to investigate the convergence of different levels of semiclassical approximations [1] towards the exact quantum mechanical S-matrix and the importance of diffraction effects [2] for the unitarity of the semiclassical S-matrix.
