The electronic origin band spectrum of the 3Σu− ← 3Σg− transition of C4 and the 1Πu ← X1Σg+ transition of C5 [1] have been recorded in the gas phase, using cavity ring down spectroscopy in a supersonic planar plasma [2]. An uniform plasma is generated both by discharge and ablation techniques. Whereas the C5 band is heavily broadened, the C4 spectrum clearly shows rotational structure. Besides the origin band transitions additional transitions to vibrationally excited levels in the upper electronic state are reported as well.
