Photoionisation and Photofragmentation of Li@C60 — •Frank Rohmund, Andreas Lassesson, Martin Heden, Alexander V. Bulgakov, and Eleanor E.B. Campbell — School of Physics and Engineering Physics, Gothenburg University and Chalmers University of Technology, S-412 96 Gothenburg, Sweden
Photoionisation and photofragmentation of endohedral fullerenes were studied by exposure of an effusive molecular beam consisting of Li@C60 molecules with 192 nm UV laser light. Two very different fluence regimes were realised. Under both low and high fluence conditions, Li@C60+ ions are detected by use of a
time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Decay occurs via loss of the encapsulated Li atom and by loss of C2 units from the remaining C60 fragment at sufficiently high fluences. Only at the smallest fluences no loss of Li is observed. The loss of Li occures in the neutral channel, i.e. before ionisation is achieved by absorption of further laser photons by the neutral fragments. The results are discussed in terms of simple statistical rate models. Comparative laser desorption mass spectrometric experiments will also be presented.
