A combined theoretical and experimental study of the ν1 and ν2 stretching vibrations of Ar-HN2+ is presented. These correlate asymptotically with the NH and NN stretching vibration of HN2+, respectively, but undergo strong anharmonic interaction with each other in the complex. As a consequence, the ν2 band experiences an unusually large anharmonicity contribution to the red shift and a rather dramatic increase in intensity. The first observation of this band is presented based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy in a supersonic planar plasma, using electron impact ionization. Additional data for the ν1 band are presented as well.
