New ferroelectric liquid crystals and applications for optical waveguiding and SHG — •O. Morales, G. Priebe, K. Kunze, K. Müller, R. Macdonald, and H. J. Eichler — Optisches Institut, TU Berlin, Straße des 17. Juni 135, 10623 Berlin

New Alkyloxy-banana liquid Crystalline molecules have been studied as active media for SHG in their different thermophases. High effective nonlinear coefficients have been observed in the B2 Phases in case of an applied external electric field. Such materials are very promising to develop active optical devices such as waveguides, which, on the other hand, have been studied with polymeric liquid Crystals (Cyanobiphenyl chromophores and azo-dyes) by measuring the SHG activity. First experience and results for the realization of quasi-phase-matched NLO-waveguides for second-harmonic generation using these liquid crystalline polymers are presented.
