The C1s single-hole photoionisation cross section of the aromatic heterocycle furan has been measured from just above the C 1s ionisation threshold to 337 eV. Electron yield spectra have been measured between 287-310 ev, resolving the 2 component nature of the π* resonance and the Rydberg structure for the first time. Resonant Auger and Auger spectra have been obtained to help identify structural features present in both the single-hole cross section and in previously published lower resolution photoabsorption studies. High resolution photoelectron spectra at both the C 1s and O 1s edges are presented along with resulting vibrational analysis. The two components in the C 1s photoelectron spectra due to the different chemical environments are split by 1.5 eV. The results are compared to our previous C 1s photoionisation measurements on benzene.
The measurements were performed on the X1B beamline at the Brookhaven NSLS synchrotron radiation source.
