Characterization of experimental time series and spatio temporal data is a demanding task in plasma physics, in particular for irregular behavior of the plasma. The dynamical structure of the dynamics of a glow discharge plasma suffering from internal oscillations of the column head will be investigated employing tools borrowed from nonlinear dynamical systems theory. For the particular case investigated here it will be shown that the behavior may be described in a 4-dimensional space where a torus takes place. When the discharge current is increased, the torus is broken and phase intermittency occurs. The dynamics will be investigated using reconstructed state portraits from scalar time series as well as using spatio-temporal diagrams. Defects occurring in the latter can be associated with a characteristic behavior of the reconstructed state portrait.
