A new high current injector is now operational at the GSI Darmstadt heavy ion synchrotron (SIS). The total number of Ar+18 particles achieved in the beam so far is 3×1010 and the pulse duration is of the order of 300 ns. These beam parameters lead to a specific energy deposition of about 1 kJ/g.
Using a two-dimensional hydrodynamic computer code, BIG-2, we have simulated interaction of the above beam with a sophisticated multi-plate cylindrical lead target, taking into account the beam geometry.
By end of the year 2001 the SIS will provide an intense beam of uranium ions that will deposit 1−2 TW/g specific power in solid material. We have also simulated hydrodynamic behavior of solid as well as hollow cylindrical targets using the code BIG-2 that have been irradiated by the above uranium beam.
Our simulations show that one can achieve a high degree of compression and pressures in a multi-megabar range.
