Characteristics of soft X-rays from laser produced magnesium plasmas — •S. S. Harilal, T. Atwee, L. Aschke, and H.-J. Kunze — Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Institut für Experimentalphysik V, 44780 Bochum

Line emission from highly charged ions in the soft X-ray region represents an important diagnostics of high temperature plasmas. Laser produced plasmas are considered to be one of the best sources of X-rays, soft X-rays and EUV radiation. Time resolved emission spectroscopic measurements have been performed to investigate dynamics of highly charged ions in a laser produced magnesium plasma in the wavelength region 4 - 10 nm. A high power ruby laser emitting at 693.4 nm with pulse duration 20 ns is used for producing magnesium plasmas. The soft X-ray emission is monitored using a flat-field grazing incidence spectrograph equipped with MCP and CCD. Spectral analysis showed the presence of intense line emission from Li-like and Be-like Mg ions. Time resolved studies revealed that these ions are having high expansion velocities which gives rise to a kinetic temperature ∼ 300 eV.
