The high current injector of the Heavy Ion Beam Facility at GSI Darmstadt yields to the creation of intense heavy ion pulses. Their interaction with different states of matter leads to dense plasmas with unique features. In this experiment targets consisting of 1 to 10 parallel Pb plates were heated by an Ar ion beam with 300 MeV/u. The hydrodynamics of the interaction plasma was studied by shadowgraphy and its emission by fast shutter and multiframing photography. The time and space resolved investigations reveal phases of the plasma development which are compared with theoretical simulations.
