Experimental study of nonideal tungsten plasma — •S. Saleem, J. Haun, and H.-J. Kunze — Institut für Experimentalphysik V Ruhr-Universität Bochum NB 05/692 D-44780 Bochum Germany
As pulsed light sources, exploding wires can be used to provide intense spectral lines as well as the characteristic continuum of very high temperature black bodies. The surface brightness depends on the wire material and on the conditions under which the wires are exploded. Present studies were carried out on thin tungsten wires of 0.3 mm diameter vaporized in air by a discharge of 5000 ns period. We have measured the plasma temperature, the electrical conductivity and the density. The temperature ranges from 7000 to 30 000 K. These measurements are compared with theoretical models and a previous work.
