We study the interaction of atomic waves in longitudinaly modulated light beams using an effective complex potential with the time (space) dependent detuning. In the weak coupling regime we focus on the shaping of the atomic beam whereas in the strong coupling case we introduce the concept of a “complex kick” which leads to scattering of atoms. We have found that the initially blue detuned crystal is much more transparent for atomic waves. Moreover, the probability distribution of the outgoing wave shows a carpet like interference structure.
