Filamentation in a Dilute Gas of Ultracold Polar Molecules — •Luis Santos, Gora Shlyapnikov und Maciej Lewenstein — Institut für Theoretische Physik der Universität Hannover, Appelstr. 2, 30167 Hannover
We analyse a dilute gas of cold polar molecules oriented in an external electric field in the presence of a buffer gas. By means of classical Monte Carlo Metropolis simulations we find the formation of filament structures and analyse the thermodynamics of the system. Analytical solutions for thermodynamic functions will be presented. We also study the evolution of the system by using molecular dynamics. We analyse the case where the buffer gas is absent, and show that in this case the momentum distribution of a gas of polar molecules becomes anisotropic. Finally, we discuss the possibilities of achieving the regime of quantum degeneracy.
