Spatial coherence of near field radiation — •Carsten Henkel1, Rémi Carminati2, Karl Joulain2, and Jean-Jacques Greffet2 — 1Institut für Physik, Potsdam University, Germany — 2Laboratoire EM2C, Ecole Centrale Paris, Châtenay-Malabry, France
In the vicinity of sources, the spatial coherence of the electromagnetic field is not only determined by the wave length. We present an analytical investigation of the thermal coherence function above a flat dielectric (or metallic) surface. The relevance of the following length scales is discussed: the vertical distance of the radiation detectors, the skin depth in the metal, and the decay length of the surface plasmon. We derive an analytical estimate for the long-range coherence due to the excitation of surface plasmons.
