Influence of a stop in the resonator on transverse mode locking effects — •Qincheng Zhang and Bernd Ozygus — Optisches Institut der TU Berlin, Sekr. P1-1, Strasse des 17. Juni 135, D-10623 Berlin
The frequency degeneration of different transverse modes arises at certain resonator lengths. This degeneration effect leads to a poor beam quality and should be avoided by the construction of laser systems in fundamental mode operation. In order to minimize the degeneration effect, the influence of a pinhole and of a stretched wire in the resonator was investigated in the vicinity of the degeneration points. The degeneration effect becomes weaker when a pinhole is substituted in the resonator. The beam pattern formations were explained theoretically by the laser-field equations, considering the mode coupling effects. By using of a suitable wire, the transition of laser operation from degenerated modes to multi-path mode could be demonstrated for a diode end-pumped solid-state laser. The multi-path mode operation at the degeneration points is of interest for the improvement of the beam quality.
