SYNO: Nichtlineare Optik

SYNO IV: HV IV

SYNO IV.1: Invited Talk

Tuesday, April 4, 2000, 14:00–14:40, HS X

Exploitable nonlinear optics for femtosecond laser sources — •Wilson Sibbett and Derryck Reid — University of St Andrews, School of Physics and Astronomy, St. Andrews, Fife KY16 9ND, Scotland

The high peak intensities associated with modern femtosecond lasers and laser/amplifier combinations are such that nonlinear processes can be readily exploited. In this talk we shall review a number of primary examples where the implementation of nonlinear optical techniques has opened up distinctive and exciting methodologies for source enhancements and new applications.

These examples will extend from the demonstration of femtosecond optical parametric oscillators that have tunability extending to near 7 microns, through single-cycle pulse generation and specialist ’sonogram-based’ pulse characterisation schemes involving nonlinearities in semiconductor devices to some specific application routes. The overall aim will be to illustrate the efficiency and practicality of nonlinear optics when used in conjunction with the current generation of tunable, femtosecond laser systems.
