Numerical simulation of the dynamics of tail-like current layers — •C.-V. Meister2, A.V. Runov1, and M.I. Pudovkin11St. Petersburg Univ. — 2Astrophysical Inst. Potsdam

A two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic model of the dynamics of current-layers in the tail of the earth’s magnetosphere caused by anomalous electrical resistivity as result of small-scale plasma turbulence is proposed. Besides an initial resistivity pulse near the magnetic neutral sheet causing the beginning of the current layer distruction, anomalous resistivity generated by the magnetic field gradients is taken into account. The temporal and spatial evolution of the magnetic and electric fields, the plasma density, pressure, convection and resistivity are considered. The motion of the inductive electric field is discussed as indicator of the plasma disturbances. In the current layer, three types of magnetohydrodynamic waves are found, fast magnetoacoustic waves of compression and rarefaction as well as slow magnetoacoustic waves.
