Using a radio occultation instrument and detecting GNSS (American GPS or Russian GLONASS) satellite signals is a fairly new method to probe the atmosphere by the use of refraction. Temperature information can be derive for altitudes of about 0–50 km, and water vapor information at altitudes below 5–8 km.
Probing the atmosphere with a passive microwave limb sounder instrument is a well developed technique. One observes the emission of rotational transition lines of the species of interest and retrieves the profile. Oxygen lines allow a temperature retrieval range of up to 90 km.
A well suited method for the combination of a two measurement is the Optimal Estimation Method (OEM). We combine the two highly synergistic measurement techniques with the OEM and retrieve one hybrid dry temperature profile, spanning an altitude interval of 0 to 90 km. In addition, the effects of simultaneous water vapor retrieval are discussed. The OEM combines in an optimal way the data of both sensors, and allows a rigorous error analysis. Results of this combination of sensor data are discussed in this poster.
