Ozone Profile Accuracies from SCIAMACHY Limb Measurements — •Johannes W. Kaiser, Vladimir V. Rozanov, and John P. Burrows — Institut für Fernerkundung (ife), Universität Bremen, FB 1, 28353 Bremen
The ESA satellite ENVISAT-1, which is scheduled for launch in late 2000, will carry the spectrometer SCIAMACHY besides other instruments. SCIAMACHY will operate in the wavelength range 240–2380 nm with a spectral resolution of 0.2–1.5 nm. It represents a new generation of space-borne atmospheric measurement devices: It will operate in nadir and occultation geometry as well as in limb geometry. In the latter scattered solar light is measured in several viewing directions corresponding to different tangent heights above the earth’s horizon. Atmospheric parameter profiles of the whole day side of the earth can be retrieved at moderate vertical resolution from such limb measurements.
This poster shows the accuracies of the O3 profiles which are anticipated from SCIAMACHY’s limb measurements. Using a preliminary version of radiative transfer model SCIATRAN and a realistic estimate of SCIAMACHY’s measurement noise, weighting functions and averaging kernels are computed to determine the expected vertical resolution of O3 profiles. For the retrieval of stratospheric O3 profiles with an accuracy of 0.1–1%, a vertical resolution of 3 km will be feasible.
Analogous results for the NO2 profile retrievals are also shown.
