The atmosphere is a complex biogeophysical system. In order to assess and predict accurately its behaviour and response to changes, a detailed understanding of the physical, chemical and biological processes, which determine the behaviour of the atmosphere, is required. Such changes may result from natural phenomena (e.g. volcanic eruptions, solar proton events, variability of the solar cycle etc.) or as a result of anthropogenic activity (pollution, biomass burning, changing land usage, combustion of fossil fuels etc.)

In this presentation an overview will be provided of the parameters needed to describe the processes, which determine the chemical composition of the atmosphere. Homogenous gas phase spectroscopy and kinetics, Multiphase and Heterogeneous studies in the Laboratory of atmospheric importance will be discussed. Examples will be given to highlight, the techniques used in this type of research, which has been and will continue to be an essential aspect of modern environmental science.
