Atmospheric composition sounding missions of the European Space Agency — •Tobias Wehr — ESA/ESTEC, SCI-VRA, Keplerlaan 1, Postbus 299, 2200 AG Noordwijk, The Netherlands
Satellite measurements of the atmosphere are the ideal tool for process studies and trend observations on a global scale. The European Space Agency is a global key-player in the provision of space-borne observations of the atmospheric composition. The very successful GOME instrument onboard the ERS-2 satellite is operating since 1995 and will be followed by an advanced GOME instrument on the future Metop missions.
ESA’s largest Earth observation satellite, Envisat, will be launched in 2001 with three instruments devoted to atmospheric composition sounding, namely SCIAMACHY, MIPAS and GOMOS. Furthermore, ESA is conducting preparatory activities for a proposal for a future atmospheric chemistry mission within the frame of the Earth Explorer Missions.
