Variability of Peroxides and Formaldehyde in the Antarctic Troposphere — •Katja Riedel, Rolf Weller, and Otto Schrems — Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung, Am Handelshafen 12, 27570 Bremerhaven

Atmospheric hydroperoxides are important photooxidants and reservoirs for hydroxyl radicals that initialise the decomposition of many different trace gases. Formaldehyde an intermediate of the photooxidation of miscellaneous hydrocarbons, also plays an important role as a free radical source in the polluted and unpolluted atmosphere.

Present results of formaldehyde and peroxide measurements in marine and polar atmosphere have shown a significant deviation from photochemical model predictions indicating the necessity of further investigations. For this reason hydrogen peroxide, methylhydroperoxide and formaldehyde were monitored during an overwintering season 1997/98 and during a summer campaign in February 1999 at the German Antarctic research station Neumayer. The obtained time series will be presented. Seasonal and diurnal variations will be discussed along with parameters characterising the photochemical activity, transport and deposition processes.
