The accident at the nuclear fuel processing facility in Tokaimura (Japan): the IAEA role — •Abel J. González — Dir. of the Division of Radiation and Waste Safety, IAEA, Wien
A report will be given on the accident that happened on September 30, 1999. A preliminary fact finding mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was received in Japan shortly after the event and obtained key technical information. More information is expected to be made available and more accurate assessments will be possible at the time of this talk in March 2000. The event at Tokaimura did not involve widespread contamination of the invironment, but must nevertheless be classified as a serious industrial accident. The principle of operation of the plant and the relevant chemistry and physics will be presented as well as the consequences of the radiation accident. The role of the IAEA will be discussed in the context of the event.
