The hydrogen atom as probe of Maxwell’s equations — •Claus Lämmerzahl — Fachbereich Physik, Univ. Konstanz, 78457 Konstanz
The low energy limit of string theory and investigations in the structure of equivalence principles, for example, give theoretical hints for small modifications of the usual Maxwell equations due to quantum gravity effects. Therefore, a wide class of deviations from the usual Maxwell equations is presented. These deviations can be probed by atomic systems due to corresponding modifications of the energy levels. As special case the modifications from the coupling to an axion field is calculated. These theoretical results are compared with measured atomic spectra.
