Mapping Out Relativistic Gravity in the Solar System — •Kenneth Nordtvedt — Bozeman, Univ. of Montana, USA

Both the foundations and post-Newtonian structure of general relativity are tested using a variety of ground and space-based experiments. Universality of gravitational free-fall is confirmed to better than a part in 1012; the several relativistic (1/c2) corrections to the Newtonian gravity limit all conform to general relativity’s predictions at parts in 104 or better precision; and no Yukawa-like deviation from inverse square dependence in gravity is found at ranges from an earth radius up to several AU at a part in 1010 of gravity’s strength. Future missions including free fall comparisons in space, interplanetary laser ranging, and space deployment of novel atomic clocks, will extend the search for new long range interaction fields by several orders of magnitude in precision, providing guideposts for theoretical work aimed at unification of physical law.
