Since the quadrupole moment depends sensitively on the specific orbitals which are occupied, it becomes an important quantity to verify the configuration of a superdeformed (SD) band. Mean lifetimes have been measured for SD bands of 145Gd with DSAM. High-spin states in 145Gd have been populated in the 114Cd(36S,5n) reaction at 182 MeV and studied with GASP at the LNL, Italy. Quadrupole moments of Q0 = 11.8 ± 0.8 eb and 13.5 ± 1.0 eb have been obtained for the yrast and first excited SD bands. The interpretation of these results requires a modification of the previous configuration assignments [1]. For the configuration assignment to the yrast SD band one should take into account the π [404]9/2 configuration and that the ν [514]9/2 orbital is not crossed by the ν 71 intruder orbital. Our new configuration assignments are π 61 π [404]9/2 ν [514]9/2 ν 7 0 for the yrast SD band and π 62 ν [642]5/2 ν 70 for the first excited SD band between the two crossings.
