The ANKE Data Acquisition System — •M. Hartmann1, M. Drochner2, W. Erven2, K.-H. Watzlawik1, P. Wuestner2, and K. Zwoll21Institut für Kernphysik, FZ-Jülich — 2Zentrallabor für Elektronik, FZ-Jülich

The multi-crate data-acquisition system supports the standard readout systems CAMAC, FASTBUS and VME. It has been designed to meet the requirements in medium energy physics, e.g. recording of high trigger rates with a medium event size (≤ 5 KByte). For a total triggerrate of 10000 s−1 about 50 % of the events are written to tape. The readout time per event is about 100 µs. The crates are read out in parallel using powerful and cost efficient INTEL compatible PC’s running under UNIX. The data is transmitted in clusters of subevents via a Fast-Ethernet-connection to the eventbuilder and are written to tape for storage by using a fast DLT tape drive. In order to ensure the correctness of every event, each read-out system employs a synchronization-module developed for that purpose. These modules are interfaced by a ring-like bus-system. The parallel readout system is scaleable over a wide range and is supported by an extensive body of software. The software enables interactive communication with the individual sub-systems, which is particularly useful during commissioning and for general diagnostic purposes.
