The study of near threshold meson production in pp and pd collisions involving polarized beams and polarized targets offers the rare opportunity to gain a better understanding of short range features of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. COSY presents itself as a unique environment to perform studies of heavy meson production reactions, once an appropriate detector setup becomes available. The measurement of spin correlation observables requires a cylindrically symmetric detector arrangement capable to measure the momenta and the directions of outgoing charged hadrons, as well as thin purely polarized internal gas targets. For the range of momenta (300 - 2500 MeV/c) of the outgoing protons in heavy meson production magnetic separation is required. The concept of such a detector system, based on a superconducting toroidal magnetic spectrometer providing fields around 3 T, will be presented.
