New Developments in the COSY Cryogenic Target System — •Salem Abd El-Samad, K. Kilian, R. Klein, and E. Roderburg — Institut für Kernphysik, FZ Jülich
A very light liquid hydrogen/deuterium target has been
constructed and used in the external COSY experiments. The target cell
is
6mm in diameter and 4mm long with very thin windows of 0.9µm Mylar
foil.
Early versions are described in NIM A349 (1994), 15 and 425 (1999),
403.
A comparison between thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the three
heat conductors (Cu, Al, Ag) was done. Resulting cool down times will be
shown.
Recently, a gravity assisted heat pipe system has been developed with
the
target liquid as transport medium. The combination of heat pipe and thin
target cell provides stable working conditions with minimum density
variation and minimizes inactive materials to less than 10g in the 32cm
long standard setup. These heat pipes with a nominal diameter of 16mm
combined with the target cell are routinely used with
H2/D2/CH4/N2. A
comparison of the operating conditions with heat pipe and solid heat
conductors will be shown. A heat pipe of 2m length and 16mm diameter is
under development for future Time of Flight Spectrometer (TOF)
experiments.
