With the first excited state of 17Ne
being bound to one-proton emission but unbound to the emission of two protons,
this nucleus is a promising candidate for the first-time identification of
simultaneous two-proton radioactivity. Indeed experimental evidence for this
long-searched decay mode has been found in a first experiment, however with
limited statistics [1]. Therefore a new experiment has been performed,
optimized for high detection efficiency.
The first excited state in 17Ne has been populated via Coulomb excitation
by scattering a 17Ne secondary beam off a 197Au target. The 17Ne
beam (60 A·MeV) was produced from a primary beam of 20Ne
(100 A·MeV) at the K1200 cyclotron of the NSCL (MSU) via projectile
fragmentation, separated by the A1200 fragment separator and purified using
a Wien filter. A kinematical complete detection of all reaction products
was performed using a highly segmented multi-stage particle telescope,
enhanced in granularity and resolution compared to the
previous setup.
Results of the analysis on the identification of the two-proton
radioactivity will be presented, also aiming at an answer to the question of
a possible correlation between the two protons.
