Neutron production by 0.4 - 2.5 GeV proton beams on thick W, Hg and Pb targets‡ — •A. Böhm — GANIL, 14076 Caen, France
We have measured
neutron multiplicity distributions
as well as reaction cross sections in 0.4,
0.8, 1.2, 1.8, and 2.5 GeV proton-induced reactions on thick W, Hg and
Pb
targets
of different geometries.
Changing the target thickness (0.5 to 35 cm) and
diameter (8 to 15 cm) provides sensitivity
to the different (intra- versus inter-nuclear cascade)
steps in the reaction process.
The motivation for this experiment is given by
the need for reliable data for the target station
of the European Spallation Source and
for applications related to transmutation of nuclear wastes.
The measurements have been performed at the COSY-accelerator
in FZ-Jülich with the 4π neutron detector BNB
(Berlin Neutron Ball).
This highly efficient Gd-loaded liquid scintillator detector
provides neutron data with virtually no lower energy threshold.
The presented data are compared to simulations
using the HERMES [1] code.
