The assembling of the polarized atomic beam source has been completed. All six permanent sextupole magnets, delivered by Vacuumschmelze Hanau, yield pole-tip field strenghts ∼ 1.6 T. Field-distribution measurements have revealed 54- and 102-pole contributions superposed on the 6-pole distribution in agreement with the analytical results by Halbach. The rf-transition units, built at the Universität Erlangen, have been installed. The degree of dissociation in the beam has been studied with use of a crossed-beam quadrupole mass spectrometer. A novel type of beam monitor, based on the recombination heat delivered to a grid of thin wires, has been used for beam-profile studies. The absolute intensity of the polarized atomic beam and the efficiencies of the rf-transition units have been measured with a compression-tube. Additional studies with a Lamb-shift polarimeter, developed at the Universität zu Köln, are under way. The design of the storage cell and the test measurements concerning the cell size and the cell–COSY beam interaction are discussed.
