Recently, an Effective Field Theory that describes the nucleon-nucleon interactions was formulated by Kaplan, Savage and Wise [1]. The resulting power counting allows for simple, model independent, systematic and rigorous computations of the properties of nuclear systems with an error estimate. The talk focuses on applications to the computation of nuclear three body properties: The real and imaginary part of the quartet S wave phase shift in nd scattering for centre-of-mass momenta of up to 300 MeV is presented, using both perturbative pions and an approach in which pions are integrated out [2]. The results suggest that pion effects are small even at high momenta. Also, the phase shifts for the partial waves in the spin quartet and doublet channel of nd scattering at centre-of-mass momenta of up to 140 MeV were calculated at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading order with pions integrated out [3]. All calculations demonstrate convergence and agree with both phase shift analyses and potential model calculations (as available), but extend to a higher, so far untested momentum régime above the deuteron breakup point.
