Solving Einstein’s Equations on Supercomputers — •Eduard Seidel — Max-Planck-Institut für Gravitationsphysik, Albert-Einstein-Institut, Haus 5, Am Mühlenberg, 14476 Golm
I will give an overview of recent developments in solving Einstein’s equations of general relativity on large supercomputers. These equations govern the behavior of such exotic objects as black holes, neutron stars, and Universe itself. Although the equations were written down near the beginning of this century, because of the complex nonlinear, coupled, elliptic-hyperbolic nature, it is difficult to obtain detailed 3D solutions without powerful computers. During the last decade computer power has advanced to the point where crude solutions are now possible on the largest machines available.
I will review recent simulations performed by the group at the Max-Planck-Institut-für-Gravitationsphysik, in collaboration with other groups (notably Washington University in St. Louis, NCSA, and the University of the Balearic Islands). These include astrophysically motivated simulations of black hole collisions, collisions of neutron stars, and simulations of pure theoretical interest including the dynamics of strongly gravitating pure wave systems that may collapse to black holes. Movies of simulations will be shown.
