The evaluation of quantum corrections via higher-order Feynman diagrams in the theory of the electroweak and strong interactions requires complicated and laborious calculations, which however can be structured in a strictly algorithmic way. Some of the first computer algebra programs were in fact developed in order to facilitate this kind of calculations, and computer algebra has been a common tool in this field now for several decades. After a brief historical overview it is sketched how computer algebra is applied in present research on investigating the fundamental interactions of elementary particles with high precision. Some examples of recent results obtained in this way are discussed, and an outlook is given on the impact that computer algebra could have in this field in the near future.
