Study of the internal structure of jets in photoproduction at HERA — •Margherita Milite — DESY, Notkestr. 85, 22603 Hamburg
Results on the internal structure of jets produced in quasi-real photon-proton collisions (photoproduction), using the data collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA are presented. The structure of jets is expected to depend mainly on the type of primary parton, quark or gluon, from which the jet originated and to a lesser extent on the particular hard scattering process. The measurement of the jet structure allows to investigate the differences between quarks and gluons, providing a stringent test of perturbative QCD calculations (pQCD). Jets are identified using the longitudinally invariant kT-cluster algorithm and their structure is studied in terms of the jet shape and subjet multiplicity, observables which, at sufficiently high jet transverse energy, are expected to be calculable by pQCD. By selecting photoproduced jets, containing a leading charmed particle, which is identified via the decay channel D*+ → D0 π+ (and charge conjugated), it is possible to obtain an enriched sample of quark jets. This procedure provides an unbiased measurement of the structure of quark-initiated jets. A comparison with the jet shape and mean average multiplicity of subjets in an inclusive sample of photoproduced jets is presented.
