Measurements of Σ⁻ and Λ(1520) baryon production in hadronic Z decays are discussed. Inclusive spectra are compared to predictions of fragmentation models. The relatively high Λ(1520) rate suggests that many stable baryons descend from orbitally excited states similarly as for mesons. The production rates of mesons and baryons seem to follow universal phenomenological rules related to isospin, strangeness, and mass of the particles.
