Search for the SM Higgs boson at the highest energy of LEP — •S. Likhoded — DESY Zeuthen
In the standard electroweak theory a spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism is assumed which assigns masses to fermions and bosons. As a remnant a neutral scalar particle, the Higgs particle, is predicted but not found up to now. Precision measurements near the heavy gauge boson Z favour a Higgs with a mass of about 100 GeV. If this is true the Higgs boson can be discovered at LEP. I will report on the search for the SM Higgs boson in the at the present LEP energies dominant production mechanism - Higgs-strahlung process, where the Higgs decays into b-quarks and Z to quarks: e+e−→ Z*→ H Z → bb qq. Data are collected by the L3 experiment at a center of mass energy of 196, 200 and 202 GeV in 1999 year with an integrated luminosity of 81.45 pb−1, 80.55 pb−1 and 36.76 pb−1 respectively. The observed candidates are consistent with the expectations from Standard Model processes without a Higgs signal. From the results of these searches the new mass limits were derived.
