Variational Calculations in Yang-Mills theories — •O. Schröder and H. Reinhardt — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Eberhard-Karls Universität Tübingen, D-72076 Tübingen
We apply to Yang-Mills theory the time-dependent variational principle, which has proved to be useful in many-body physics. An essential property of Yang-Mills wave functionals is Gauß’ law, which is incorporated via a projector. The projection onto gauge invariant states is performed in an approximate fashion using the cranking approach developed in nuclear physics in the description of deformed nuclei. This approximation results in solving the time-independent variational principle with the constraint that Gauß’ law is fulfilled on the level of expectation values. We also seek contact with perturbation theory.
