We have used the large transverse magneto optical Kerr effect (T-
MOKE) at the Fe and Ni 3p core level thresholds to obtain images,
spectra and hysteresis loops utilizing the soft X-ray scanning
microscope at HASYLAB. The sample consists of an array of about 10
µm wide permalloy stripes deposited on SiO2. The images with T-
MOKE as a contrast mechanism show magnetic domains also within single
stripes. Hysteresis loops of single stripes were measured by soft X-
ray T-MOKE. For a magnetization perpendicular to the wires the
results differ considerably from hysteresis loops of the whole array,
measured by conventional MOKE.
