Domain structure in atomically thin magnetic particles — •Andreas Vaterlaus, Christian Stamm, Fredy Marty, Urs Maier, and Danilo Pescia — Labor für Festkörperphysik, ETH Hönggerberg, 8093 Zürich, Schweiz
Atomically thin particles with a lateral dimension as small as 100 nm are produced and investigated. In contrast to thick particles the two dimensional structures with inplane magnetization are free of magnetic domains, their shape is of no importance for the magnetic properties and the particles mutual interaction is negligible. Structures magnetized perpendicular to the plane of the film behave differently: Only sufficiently small particles are single domain. The different behavior of particles magnetized inplane and out of plane is explained by analyzing the relevant magnetostatic energies. Combining Scanning Tunneling Microscopy with the technique of Scanning Electron Microscopy with Spin Analysis of the secondary electrons allows simultaneous structural and magnetic characterization of atomically thin and laterally small structures.
