Cluster formation and its influence on the magnetic properties of MnBi. — •A. Merico, H. Kierey, A. Borgschulte, D. Menzel, and J. Schoenes — Institut für Halbleiterphysik und Optik, TU Braunschweig
MnBi thin films have been prepared by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE).
To this goal single crystalline bismuth layers have been grown on
BaF2(111) substrates and Mn layers have
been alloyed into Bi. The morphology and the magnetic properties of the
films have been investigated by
in-situ RHEED, ex-situ STM, and SQUID measurements. A maximum
value of 25 kOe for the coercitivity has
been found, confirming earlier experiments on the same subject.
In this
contribution we report on the dependence
of the magnetic properties on the sample morphology. Very strong
correlations between the annealing temperature
and morphology as well as Mn content and morphology have been observed.
