Structural and magnetic properties of Fe thin films on Cu90Au10(001) — •S. S. Kang, W. Kuch, and J. Kirschner — Max-Planck-Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, D-06120 Halle

A series of Fe thin films with thicknesses ranging from 2 monolayers (ML) to 30 ML was deposited on a Cu90Au10 (001) substrate (a0 = 3.66 Å) at room temperature. The structural properties were investigated by low energy electron diffraction (LEED). From the intensity/voltage (I/V) measurements of the (0,0) LEED spot, three different peak sequences, which correspond to three different structural phases, were observed. The first peak sequence, which appears at low coverages of Fe (≤ 3 ML), is related to a tetragonally expanded fcc phase with an interlayer distance a0⊥ around 1.90 Å. With increasing Fe thickness, the second peak sequence becomes predominant, which is associated with an interlayer distance a0⊥≈ 1.74 Å. With further increasing Fe thickness (≥ 12 ML), the third peak sequence occurs and indicates a bcc (110) structure with a0⊥≈ 2.02 Å. The magnetic properties were studied by in situ magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). It was found that the Fe films of the first and third phase have a high-spin ferromagnetic moment, while they exhibit a low magnetic moment in the second phase. Moreover, the MOKE loops reveal that the magnetization of all films is in-plane. No perpendicular component could be found at the thicknesses investigated here.
