Magnetic properties of GdSi films — •Oleg Krupin1, Franziskus Heigl1, Günter Kaindl1, Kai Starke1, and Sergueji Gorovikov21Fachbereich Physik, Freie Universität Berlin — 2Sate University of St. Petersburg, Russia

With the discovery of a ’giant’ magnetocaloric effect, compounds of gadolinium (Gd) with elements of the Si group have recently attracted considerable interest. Here we report the first study of 10 ... 20  nm thick   GdxSiy films, which were prepared by simultaneous vacuum deposition of both elements (’coevaporation’) onto a cold W(110) substrate held at 30   K. The film stochiometry, monitored by Auger spectroscopy, was varied from dilute Si to nearly   GdSi2. For stochiometries near   Gd5Si3 we observe, using alternating-current magneto-optical Kerr effect (AC-MOKE) in the visible-light regime, ordering temperatures between ∼ 150   K and ∼ 190   K. The films show a much higher magnetic susceptibility as compared to Gd-metal films, and a remarkable thermal stability: they break up into islands only above 550  C.
