Plasmon-supported transmission of light through small holes in conductive screens — •Reinhold Wannemacher — Institut fuer Physik, Universitaet Chemnitz, D-09107 Chemnitz
The transmission of light through periodic arrays of nanometric holes in metallic screens has been investigated recently /1/. Strong transmission enhancements have been found, which were ascribed to resonant excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) on the surface of the screen, made possible by the grating momentum of the periodic arrays. SPP on both sides of the screen were assumed to be strongly coupled through the holes, but the coupling was not characterised in detail. We have performed numerical calculations of the electric field distributions and energy density in the vicinity of a single hole as well as finite arrays of holes in a metallic screen as a function of wavelength, and have calculated the transmission spectra as a function of the hole size, screen thickness, and material parameters of the screen. Highly localized near-field enhancements in the vicinity of the holes have been found.
