Dewetting of thin liquid films: Impact of the effective interface potential on dewetting patterns — •Ralf Seemann, Stefan Schlagowski, Karin Jacobs, and Stephan Herminghaus — Abteilung Angewandte Physik, Universität Ulm, 89069 Ulm
Depending on the effective interface potential of a liquid film on a solid substrate, the film ist stable, metastable or unstable. For the last two cases, the liquid can dewet the surface. We study the rupture scenario and the evolving dewetting patterns of thin liquid polystyrene films on smooth solid surfaces. By varying the properties of the substrate and the thickness of the films we can influence the strength of the short- and long-range forces acting on the fluid layer. We compare our experimental results for the dewetting patterns with simulations of other groups.
In situ-recording of the rupture of a fluid film by atomic force microscopy gives us insight in thin film properties like the contact angle and allows us to reconstuct the effective interface potential and to compare it with theoretical calculations.
