Dynamics of dewetting: Flow of compex fluids — •Karin Jacobs, Ralf Seemann, Stefan Schlagowski und Stephan Herminghaus — Abteilung Angewandte Physik, Universität Ulm, 89069 Ulm

In a moving (not superfluid) liquid, energy is dissipated. The way this dissipation takes place strongly influences the flow behavior of a complex fluid. We study the flow of thin films of a polystyrene melt dewetting a solid substrate. Here, viscous friction within the liquid and sliding friction at the solid/liquid interface are the most important mechanisms for energy dissipation. Depending of the strength of both, the profile of the dewetting front changes. By characterizing these profiles and by recording the dewetting velocity we are able to quantify both mechanisms. Some dewetting fronts show interesting hydrodynamical instabilities which we can assign to a special interplay between viscous and sliding friction.
